Description of the System

Defining the standards and requirements for developing high-quality engine lubricants.

The EELQMS embraces various European, North American and global quality standards, test methods and procedures, together with industry Codes of Practice and the requirements of the ACEA European Oil Sequences.

Each element of the EELQMS specifies detailed requirements that should be followed in the course of designing, developing, manufacturing or marketing engine lubricants. By incorporating all of these elements, the EELQMS provides comprehensive guidelines for developing high quality lubricants for which a valid ACEA performance claim can be made. Meeting the requirements of each of the constituent elements of EELQMS is the responsibility of the lubricant marketer.

ACEA

European Oil
Sequences

ACEA European Oil Sequences

The ACEA European Oil Sequences set the minimum performance specifications for lubricants used in different automotive engine categories of light duty passenger cars and heavy duty trucks.

ATC

Code of
Practice

ATC Code of Practice

The ATC Code of Practice has been devised to encourage both the consistent and precise operation of engine testing and the consistent reporting of results during the performance evaluation of automotive lubricant formulations.

ATIEL

Code of
Practice

ATIEL Code of Practice

The ATIEL Code of Practice provides lubricant formulation guidelines designed to ensure the development of consistent quality lubricants which meet the performance requirements of the ACEA Oil Sequences.

SAE
Standards

SAE Standards

SAE International develops technical standards and recommended practices for passenger cars among which is SAE J300, which defines some rheological limits for the classification of engine lubricating oils.

ACC Code
of Practice

ACC Code of Practice

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) Product Approval Code of Practice helps to ensure that an engine lubricant meets its performance specifications through the use of specified engine tests, procedures, and record-keeping.

API

API

The API (American Petroleum Institute) establishes and maintains standards for the global oil and natural gas industry. Of particular relevance for engine lubricants is API 1509, which describes the API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System.

CEC/ASTM Test Methods

CEC/ASTM Test Methods

The CEC (Coordinating European Council) develops and maintains test methods for performance testing of automotive engine oil, fuels and transmission fluids.

ASTM International develops North American engine and laboratory tests and standards, some of which are included in the ACEA Oil Sequences and are adopted in their entirety as part of the EELQMS.

European
Registration
Centre

European Registration Centre

The ATC European Registration Centre (ERC) is responsible for the administration of the test registration protocols for CEC tests that are within the ACEA European Oil Sequences. ERC administers all test registration for candidate and reference testing and reports to ATC on adherence to registration and test referencing procedures.
